To grasp the quality of dependence, we first must first look at the Founder of the Church and see dependence in Him.
“So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise” (John 5:19, read v.30 also). Even the Holy Spirit takes this same attitude; “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come” (John 16:13).
Jesus brings this issue down to ourselves in His teaching about the vine and the branches; “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). He introduces this relationship with Him through the picture of a grape vine. The branches only live and bear fruit if they always live connected/dependent on the vine. The other alternative is separation from a vital food source and ultimate death. God wants us always connected to His life source in His Son.
