“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ And he answered, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. And he went to the other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first” (Matthew 21:28–31).
I have been greatly convicted that at times I say things to give an impression to others with no inner intention of doing what I said. I have been that second son. Submission grew with the first son, and God wants submission to grow with us. If the requirements of serving God’s mission seem hard, take time to let the Spirit develop inner willingness. Stop giving impressions and seek the fruit of genuine submission to the Holy Spirit.
