Another part of the conversation that Tim and I have had, perhaps more frequently as we get older, is leaving behind us a legacy or model that others can follow after we are gone. While some of that centers on the manual and upgrades that are needed, it also has to do with what we leave by example in our personal lives and the way we conduct ourselves in ministry.
Is this inappropriate boasting? Paul says, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Even as to not receiving money for his ministry, Paul insisted that “It was not because we do not have the right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate” (2 Thessalonians 3:9).
We desire to leave behind us a model that is the most effective possible so that the gospel reaches the last unreached people group, and then the Lord will come. We are not seeking to build a name for ourselves or leave behind us a monument to men or an organization, but a testimony to an effective ministry that has the marks of the Spirit’s power that fosters movements of God.
