We have looked at humility in the person of Jesus; its pristine quality and how He lived it out from incarnation to ascension. It should be no surprise that Jesus would teach this quality to His disciples specifically and also in general statements. I will not be able to cover all of them in this blog, and in any case, you need time to process them prayerfully, asking the Holy Spirit to form them in you.
We begin with a reference where Jesus refers to Himself as the model; “Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29). I would be so bold as to say that I can almost tell how much time a person spends in the presence of Jesus by their attitude of humility (or lack of humility). There is no other place to learn this quality. You must be yoked with Jesus to learn humility; learning to pull together in life and ministry as united in spirit with Jesus. Busy schedules, taking on more than God intends you to have, putting your family and marriage after ministry, are all indicators that your yoke has broken and there is little or no intimacy with your Lord and Master. You are not learning from Him.
Are you sitting at the feet of Jesus and learning deep lessons of character (Luke 10:38-42)? This is where the yoke begins and the kind of intimacy that is more important than anything else in life! I would be glad to hear from you if you or someone you know is struggling. Any emails sent to me are totally confidential. firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
