Jesus used the Word of God throughout His ministry in response to many situations, but perhaps the most powerful illustration is when He responded to the devil in the wilderness during his temptation. These two verses require our meditation for current application.
· “But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God’”” (Matthew 4:4).
· “And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone’”” (Luke 4:4).
The power of this simple statement needs to grip our minds and hearts. God has carefully and accurately given to us His Word in written form so that it is preserved for us in this day. As Jesus used it to refute the outright deceptive and subtle lies of Satan, so God intends that we use it to refute false teaching and lies today. They are multiplying very rapidly. Whether it is the degrading of human life from conception to death or twisting the sacred plan of God for marriage, we must be equipped with what God has written; first to strengthen ourselves with truth, and second, to confront with confidence what is false with God’s eternal Word. This is only gained through spending time prayerfully with Jesus in His Word!
