Yesterday we looked at Jesus’ Command to “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15). Something must take place before they went out (and before we can go out) to proclaim the gospel. If we follow Jesus’ command to the disciples, He gave specific instructions as to how to “GO” so that it would be impossible for them or us to fail. Notice what Jesus said before ascending into heaven:
“And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49).
“And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;” (Acts 1:4).
The night before Jesus was crucified, He was careful to tell the disciples; “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16–17). Take time to read verses 16 to 26 and let Jesus’ words provide comfort and confidence in the presence of the Holy Spirit. Jesus ends this section by saying, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26).
Tomorrow we will look at Acts 1:8 and see more details in Jesus’ instructions to the disciples before they went out preaching the gospel.
