There are two elements to this sending that we must hold together if we are going to realize the importance of our mission, and then be effective in our mission.
- The test that Jesus put Peter through in John 21 was to see whether his love for the Lord was as genuine as Peter thought it was. This goes back to my blog two days ago on Mark 3:14. Jesus’ call is FIRST, “to be with Him”. This requires genuine love tested by the Lord, not man’s standards. Genuine love tolerates no distance!
- The second test is whether we will wait to be sent out by the Holy Spirit. Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, He told the disciples “to wait for the promise of the Father…the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:4-5). While this is the initial giving of the Spirit, the principle holds true throughout the Book of Acts (13 and 16). This sending guarantees His power for results!
