I'm ashamed to admit that there have been many times in my life when I thought the way I was going was the right way, only to discover I made a wrong turn or simply did not read the directions correctly. Pride makes it hard to admit we have gone the wrong way. STOP, TURN AROUND AND RETURN to the point of departure from the right way. Who better than Peter to remind us to “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,” (1 Peter 5:6).
That is what Jesus was begging the church in Laodicea to do because they did not realize their real condition; “wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked” (Revelation 3:17). Let me relate what I just said above to the words of Jesus to this church in Revelation 3:14-22. “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.” (3:19).
First, the way God works in our lives, marriages, families, and churches is always from an infinite love for those He rebukes, reproves and disciplines.
Second, the way back to God’s way is through genuine repentance. We must rely on the Holy Spirit and ask Him to work this in us.
Third, be zealous (sincere, earnest, wholehearted) about RETURNING to God’s awesome plan and purpose for us in the Scriptures. If you give something only 99% of your mind and heart to the Lord and His way, you will miss 99% of the joy. It’s the last 1% that makes the presence of Christ a fellowship of unearthly quality and glory. Otherwise this will be just another superficial, powerless and wasted study. Jesus said rivers of living water would flow out of us (John 7:38-39). The Holy Spirit is “able (and desires) to do exceedingly abundantly more than we ask or think according to His power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). Please do not quench (1 Thess. 5:19), resist or grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). He is pleading and begging to take over our lives and ministries. That was His purpose in coming at Pentecost!
